Sandokan The King of the Sea Emilio Salgari Nico Lorenzutti 9780978270759 Books Reviews
The title of this adventure novel by Emilio Salgari does not refer to a can of sardines or scungilli, but to a pirate cruiser. Sandokan The King of the Sea is the fifth of that popular Italian author’s near-dozen turn-of the-nineteenth-century thrillers translated into English. About eleven years after Sandokan, an awesome pirate in Southeast Asian waters known as the Tiger of Mompracem, vanquished his deadly nemesis Suyodhana, a chieftain Thug known as the Tiger of India, in a novel of that title, finds him facing a new enemy. In this volume a mysterious figure has armed the Dyaks, the native people of Borneo, and led them into bloody conflict against the great Indian hunter and friend of Sandokan Tremal-Naik. Fortunately, Snadokan’s Portuguese blood brother Yanez rescues Tremal-Naik and his lovely daughter Darma—both of whom are war captives—by very cleaver stealth. But things are worse than they seem. The new Rajah of Sarawak, James Brooke’s nephew, has forced Sandokan from his beloved island hideout of Mompracem in order to rid the region of piracy, and place it under British control. Or so it seems. Has the great Sandokan finally met his match? Will he defeat his enemies with his new battleship King of the Sea? Is this the end of him and his formidable Tigers of Mompracem? There is enough action in The King of the Sea to keep the reader turning its pages, a love component, a Jules Verne type of genius character with a marvelous invention he uses to combat Sandokan’s enemies, and a fine surprise ending. All in all, The King of the Sea is a satisfying addition to a thrilling saga.

I can not wait until the next Salgari book is translated into English !
Great adventure, a total abandon to the magic of the exotic, unrestrained ADVENTURE, writ large.
It ranks with Karl May, another author who is unfortunately not well known in the United States. Perhaps releasing the Italian TV movie version here on DVD would help popularize it.
none.
